Westmead Private Hospital to be greener in 2022 and beyond
Jan 20, 2022
Westmead Private Hospital will start the new year “greener” than ever before with a new solar panel system set to slash its emissions and improve sustainability.
The new 300 kilowatt (kW) system, situated on Westmead Private’s roof, will soon be joined by an additional 227 kW system, which combined will save almost 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over their lifespan.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Flatley said he is excited the hospital will be more sustainable in 2022 and beyond.
“Saving almost 10,000 tonnes of carbon emissions is the equivalent of taking 183 cars off the road – that’s a lot of cars,” Mr Flatley said.
“Installing solar panels is great for the environment and creating a more sustainable hospital for the future.
“Proudly, we were able to carry out the installation of the first system with no disruptions to our usual services, and we expect to do the same with the second system when it is installed in March.”
Westmead Private Hospital’s switch to solar is part of Ramsay Health Care’s sustainability strategy which focuses on creating stronger communities, healthier people and a thriving planet.
The solar panel system installation is the third significant sustainability initiative Westmead Private has introduced recently. In March this year the hospital began removing single use plastic items, including water bottles, so far avoiding more than 500,000 items becoming landfill. Westmead Private Hospital has also previously upgraded to energy efficient lighting throughout the hospital.
Westmead’s Maternity Unit is currently celebrating a very sustainable festive season, after spending the year collecting what would have becoming rubbish to create recycled Christmas decorations. From bottle cap wreaths to medication pamphlet snowflakes, the team has dedicated themselves to caring for mothers and mother earth.
Ramsay Health Care is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and addressing climate change head on through meaningful sustainability initiatives.
