Westmead Private Leading the Way in Robotic Surgery

Dec 16, 2014

On the 10th December 2014 Westmead Private Hospital celebrates the 2nd anniversary of being at the forefront of Robotic Surgery in Australia.

This advanced minimally invasive technology provides our experienced surgeons with enhanced visualization, precision and control.

What does this mean for patients? Less pain, less risk, less scarring and a quicker recovery.

Specialised technology requires a very special team of surgeons and clinical staff. At Westmead Private we are justifiably proud of our team. Constantly striving to improve patient outcomes has led to many Australian-first’s in the areas of urology, gynaecology and general surgery. Some of these include:

  • Australia's first partial nephrectomy using state-of-the-art robotic technology with firefly imaging – Dr Howard Lau (Urologist)
  • First hospital in the Southern Hemisphere to perform a robotic single site hysterectomy using the da Vinci Surgical System -  Dr Felix Chan (Gynacologist)
  • Australia’s first single site robotic assisted Sacrocoplopexy for pelvic floor prolapse -  Dr Felix Chan (Gynaecologist)
  • Australia's first totally robotic transanal endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of a sessile polyp today – Dr Gary McKay  (Colorectal Surgeon)

Over 380 robotic procedures later our world class surgeons continue to push the limits of this game changing technology to perfect even more innovative and complex surgical procedures – redefining minimally invasive surgery.
